"Swelter" is a striking self-portrait by artist Tif Choate, her first, born from the chaos of the 2021 wildfires. As the artist turned fifty, she created a series of self-portrait photographs, selecting this one to develop over five years into a powerful meditation on resilience and endurance.

A nude figure sits in quiet resistance, shading herself from a surreal, blazing ecliptic sun. Her skin, painted in cool blues and soft, smoky hues, contrasts with the fiery landscape that swirls around her in bold reds, oranges, and deep violets. At the apex of the eclipse, reflective crystal gems are sewn into the canvas, creating an interactive, dimensional experience for the viewer.
